MMA has been full of excitement these past few weeks with special guest visits from our very own Michigan lawmakers!

Representative Donovan McKinney of the Michigan House of Representatives recently visited our MMA scholars to share his passion for reading! During his visit, he spoke with students about government, the importance of education, and the power of dreaming big to make a meaningful impact. He emphasized the value of setting goals, believing in oneself, and striving for greatness. Representative McKinney also highlighted the importance of giving back, especially within our community, encouraging students to take pride in where they come from and to envision their future paths. He concluded his visit by reading to our students and inviting our scholars to the Capitol, where they’ll have the opportunity to see him in action and learn more about Michigan’s government. Our students are eagerly looking forward to their visit to Lansing this spring!

Additionally, MMA was honored to host Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist as part of March is Reading Month! His presence filled the school with excitement, smiles, and a shared sense of pride in showcasing what MMA looks, feels and sounds like. During his visit, students had the opportunity to present their wax museum projects on influential leaders in Black History. Led by a student guide, Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist toured the school, engaging with classrooms to discuss government, his role in supporting Michigan students, and the importance of striving to be your best.
His height captivated students’ attention, leading to a fun and memorable moment where he encouraged them to eat their vegetables! His humor and warmth fostered a strong connection with our scholars, sparking meaningful and educational discussions.

Ms. Shanina continued these conversations, advocating for both Macomb Montessori Academy students and the charter school movement. She highlighted the dedication and passion of charter school students and emphasized the need for equal opportunities and adequate resources to help our students thrive. Additionally, she shared how the Montessori method fosters a love for learning among our scholars. Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist wrapped up his visit by reading a book with a kindergarten class—an experience that perfectly captured the joy of learning at MMA.
We are incredibly grateful for our staff members who leverage their networks to create opportunities for advocacy and showcase the incredible work happening in our school. Thank you to everyone who partners with us to highlight the MMA difference!
