Preschool

Macomb Montessori Academy (MMA) offers a full day, four days a week preschool program to children who are four-years-old on or before September 1, 2024.

Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP)* preschool is available. We believe the benefits of a four-day program are immeasurable. At MMA, all our policies and practices are child-centered. Children love to learn by exploring and deeply concentrating on their chosen activities. We offer them the freedom to repeat those activities without interruption until they master them. This supports a child’s natural learning process.

GSRP Preschool

Preschool is an important time to set the tone for what school really is since this is the first full year of education for many students. At MMA, we believe that every student is unique and an individual. While in preschool, your child will learn social skills and the basics of the school environment that will be very valuable for their years to come.

*The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is an income-based, tuition-free, preschool program for four-year-old children. The class meets Monday through Thursday, the same times as the regular school day. The staff follows Creative Curriculum and observes students based on objectives set forth in the program in which individual goals are set for each student. The curriculum focuses on four main developmental topics: social/emotional, physical, cognitive and language.

The number one goal of any preschool program is to ensure children become enthusiastic learners. Through GSRP and the Creative Curriculum, your child can be just that!

We also partner with Second Home Child Development Center, who we share a building with, who also offers GSRP preschool.

Example of How the Four-Day Schedule Supports Early Learning

Imagine you are very excited about beginning a new project today, such as learning to process digital prints from your camera, cutting and sewing a quilt, or building a new deck. You assemble the materials and begin. The joy of this process is very fulfilling, and you look forward to tomorrow when you can continue.

Something comes up, however, and you can’t get back to this labor of love until Wednesday. On Wednesday you assemble your materials, and the thrill of this work returns. You know, though, that tomorrow you will again be unable to return to this work. On Thursday your enthusiasm is dampened. You have to assemble your work again, re-trace your steps, and try to remember where you left off Wednesday. If this frustrating sequence of on-again, off-again continues, you soon lose interest in the project.

So it is with children. Starting a new learning activity is easier with consistency. It helps children maintain their enthusiasm and interest if they are allowed to continue. Waiting entire days between stages of activities causes them consternation, just as it does to you. The process of developing longer and longer attention spans is also thwarted when whole days intervene.

Additionally, there are so many activities in a Montessori classroom that no child can possibly complete them all in the school year. Imagine how much more learning can be opened up for a child who doesn’t have to limit her or his attendance to two or three days a week!

The Montessori program is designed to meet each child’s interest at his or her particular age. Missing out on many of these activities simply limits the customized possibilities that a child can enjoy.

MMA’s preschool program centers on establishing independence, self-esteem, and confidence while fostering learning at a child’s own pace.

Our teachers have four goals that encompass what we hope to achieve in the classroom.

  • Awaken your child’s spirit and imagination
  • Encourage independence and self-esteem
  • Develop kindness, courtesy, and self-discipline
  • Learn how to observe, question, and learn independently

Our preschool teacher(s) will introduce lessons to the class as a whole, small groups, and also individually. The child’s classroom is organized, warm, and inviting. It will contain different learning centers that are filled with objects that are tactile hands-on materials. There are four main areas of the curriculum that are followed throughout the school year:

  • Practical life – Activities a child will encounter during their daily living, such as; pouring, scooping, buttoning, and many more exercises that build self-esteem.
  • Sensorial – Materials that allow a child to learn size, volume, length, touch, temperature, weight, color, shape, or sound.
  • Language – Children are immersed in language throughout the day. They will participate in songs, poems, stories, discussions, and Spanish as the foreign language.
  • Mathematics – Children learn the basic math foundation of order, sequence, patterns, relationships. quantity, and dimension.

Our primary goal is to build self-confidence and independence. The caring environment offers an opportunity to develop in each child a true love of learning. Enroll your child in our Montessori-based preschool program today. Seats are limited.
