A Note to the Macomb Montessori Academy Family

Dear MMA Community,

At Macomb Montessori Academy, Black Lives Matter! The recent deaths of George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and countless others who are targeted because of their skin color have shaken me to the core. As your leader of this school, it is important that we speak out against these atrocities. The tragedies, murders and injustices that have taken place are devastating. Leaving me with the feelings of sadness, anger and unrest, hoping that we can find peace and equality for all as an outcome of these tragedies.

Macomb Montessori Academy was founded almost 7 years ago on the fundamental premise that students, teachers, staff and family members have seeds of greatness within us, regardless of their skin color. We are committed to building an inclusive environment here at MMA, one that recognizes and respects people of all backgrounds and experiences. We still stand on this promise, and we aren’t backing down now.

An important aspect of creating an inclusive environment is having open and honest conversations. Erica Prime, the lead psychologist at Macomb Montessori Academy, compiled a comprehensive resource list for parents and guardians to have conversations with children about what happened to George Floyd and other incidents of police brutality or racism. You can find a link to her blog post here.

I will end by letting you know that Macomb Montessori Academy is here for you today and always! It is our responsibility to be part of the solution. We are committed to doing our part. And we are committed to continued action.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Paull,

Head of School
